Best Buy, the nation’s largest consumer electronics chain, is trimming jobs in an effort to adjust to new changes in consumer behavior as the virus wanes. Best Buy declined to say how many jobs it was cutting but The Wall Street Journal, which was first to report the news, estimated it involved hundreds of jobs at the store level. The job cuts come after Best Buy reduced its annual sales and profit forecast late last month, citing surging inflation that has dampened consumer spending on gadgets. The Minneapolis-based company echoed Walmart, which a few days before said higher prices on basic necessities are forcing shoppers to cut back on discretionary items.

A pipeline carrying diesel has cracked open and spilled more than 45,000 gallons of fuel in a rural area of eastern Wyoming. The ruptured line is owned by a company that’s being sued by federal prosecutors over previous spills in North Dakota and Wyoming. Joe Hunter with Wyoming's Department of Environmental Quality said Friday that cleanup work is ongoing from the spill that was discovered July 27 on private ranchland near the small community of Sussex. The line is operated by Bridger Pipeline, a subsidiary of Casper, Wyoming-based True companies. Federal prosecutors have alleged in a pending federal court case that previous spills on the companies' lines violated environmental laws.
Pakistani authorities have revoked a broadcast permit for a private television station after it was taken off air following an interview during which an opposition party official allegedly incited troops and officers against the military leadership. Friday's development came after ARY TV in the southern port city of Karachi aired the interview with a close aide of former Prime Minister Imran Khan who urged Pakistani troops and officers to refuse to obey “illegal orders.” Khan's aide was subsequently arrested on treason charges and could face the death penalty. The TV’s news director was detained but released on Thursday. Pakistan’s media regulatory body took the station off air and on Friday suspended its license.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is proposing to extend the life of the state’s last operating nuclear power plant by at least five to 10 years to maintain reliable power supplies in the climate change era. A draft bill obtained Friday by The Associated Press said the plan would allow the plant to continue operating beyond a scheduled closing by 2025.The draft proposal also includes a possible loan for operator Pacific Gas & Electric for up to $1.4 billion. The proposal was confirmed by Newsom spokesman Anthony York. The draft was obtained ahead of a California Energy Commission meeting on the state’s energy needs.

A federal judge has reinstated a moratorium on coal leasing from federal lands that was imposed under former President Barack Obama and then scuttled under former President Donald Trump. Friday’s ruling from U.S. District Judge Brian Morris requires government officials to complete a new environmental review before they can resume coal sales from federal lands. Few leases have been sold in recent years as coal demand shrank drastically, but it remains a major contributor of planet-warming emissions. But the industry’s opponents had urged Morris to revive the Obama-era moratorium to ensure it can’t make a comeback as wildfires, drought, rising sea levels and other effects of climate change worsen.
Police in Florida say they will investigate a lawmaker’s allegation that a transgender student may have sexually assaulted a female student in a middle school bathroom over the summer. But school officials in Brevard County say no such attack took place and investigators say they received no reports about the rumor. Melbourne police assigned two detectives to investigate the allegations after reading Republican State Rep. Randy Fine’s social media posts about the alleged attack. Fine says parents told him that they learned about the incident from a teacher who is afraid to go public with the information. A federal appeals court is ordering statewide elections for two Georgia public service commissioners back onto the November ballot. Friday's ruling came only a week after a federal judge postponed the elections after finding that electing the five commissioners statewide illegally diluted Black votes. The decision by three judges on the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals follows a U.S. Supreme Court decision that says judges shouldn’t order changes close to elections. District 3 Commissioner Fitz Johnson and District 2 Commissioner Tim Echols are both Republicans seeking reelection to six-year terms. Johnson is being challenged by Democrat Shelia Edwards. Echols faces Democrat Patty Durand and Libertarian Colin McKinney.
