Nozzle flow filters are used to prevent contamination, as a result of melted plastic, that causes blockages or interruptions to the injection process. These contaminations can cause damage to hot runner systems – resulting in extended downtime and increased maintenance costs. The design of voestalpine’s flow filter X, and flow filter V, both capitalize on the unique capabilities of 3D printing to create additional benefits for the injection molder by integrating a static mixer, or significantly reducing the pressure drop and shear stress.

The flow filter X integrates a static mixer and filter into a standard form factor, whereas the flow filter V integrates a high-density solid mesh filter into a standard form factor – both flow filters deliver improved performance over traditional injection molding nozzle filters.

Each filter is manufactured using Uddeholm Corrax AM Powder. This dedicated Plastic Injection Mold steel has been specifically designed for additive manufacturing applications and its properties ensure the highest possible molding performance due to its increased corrosion and wear resistance.

The configuration of the in-line static mixer, and filter, in the flow filter X, and the configuration of the in-line filter in the flow filter V, help prevent feed blockages caused by material impurities, such as those encountered when processing recycled materials, and delivers superior mixing properties when using additives.

Flow filter X combines filter and mixer in one single component and has a large filtration area, a small mesh size, good mixing properties, a low-pressure drop, low shear stress, and is corrosion- and wear-resistant. The benefits include trouble-free injection molding, lower maintenance and downtime costs, space-saving installation, better part quality, only a slight increase in injection pressure, easy cleaning, and a long lifetime.

Flow filter X should be selected if improved mixing performance is required in conjunction with high-quality filtration.

Flow filter V has an extremely low-pressure drop, very low shear stress, a small mesh size, a very large filtration area, and is also corrosion- and wear-resistant. The benefits include trouble-free injection molding, minimal increase in injection pressure, lower energy consumption, lower maintenance and downtime costs, better part quality, easy cleaning, and a long lifetime.

Flow filter V should be selected for high-quality filtration with minimum overall pressure drop.
