CASPER, Wyo. — Provided below are some details of recent law enforcement activities based on reports from the Natrona County Sheriff’s Office and the Casper Police Department.
NCSO Public Information Officer Kiera Grogan and other sources provided this information based on officer and deputy reports. Information has also been included from appearances in Natrona County Circuit Court.
Residential burglary, 3:51 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, 2800 block of Salt Creek Highway (NCSO)
A woman and her husband allegedly pulled up to the residence of the man’s late mother to find it was being actively burglarized, Grogan said Monday morning.
The woman who lived there had passed away in 2021, and most of the items in the home were in probate, according to her son. The complainants had not been at the house for three weeks. When they arrived Saturday, they blocked in the truck of a 47-year-old woman who had allegedly filled it with items from the home. The husband identified some of the items, including a dreamcatcher and a toaster.
Deputies discovered that the lock on the sliding glass door was broken.
The woman told deputies she had heard the home’s owner was deceased and was taking household items for herself as she was about to receive government assistance. She told deputies there were others involved, and gave a name, but she was the only one located on the property, the NCSO said. The woman was arrested for burglary. She was charged in circuit court Monday with felony burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, and aiding and abetting in a burglary.
Fireworks spark grass fire, 8:21 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, Highway 220
A man called deputies saying he had seen someone in a black Mustang cause a wildfire in the barrow ditch near Goose Egg by throwing fireworks out the car window. The man said the fire started immediately, and told deputies he was following the suspect vehicle.
Deputies said county fire crews had extinguished the fire by the time they arrived, and deputies proceeded to locate the reporting party, who was still following the suspect vehicle.
Deputies pulled over the Mustang and observed scorch marks on the driver’s door. They also observed blackened debris on the dash and incendiary remnants that had melted into the plastic molding of the windowsill, the report said.
The report indicates the woman driving alone initially denied having fireworks until deputies relayed their observation of an open box of Black Cat fireworks in the passenger seat.
The woman was cited for arson in the fourth degree, expired registration, and failure to provide insurance.
She told deputies she had borrowed the Mustang from her brother in Colorado for her trip through Wyoming.
Suspicious activity, 12:01 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, 1400 Block of Sunlight Drive
A woman told deputies she saw a small Chevy pickup west of her residence, Grogan said. She said it is common for vehicles to stop there to check directions, so she approached the vehicle to offer help. She said there were three young males in the truck who drove away quickly when she approached.
Due to a recent incident involving the woman’s daughter and some young males, the woman wished for this incident to be documented.
Stolen vehicle recovered, 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, Evansville
Evansville Police Chief Mike Thompson told Oil City that officers responded to a residence on the 400 block of Williams Street in search of a wanted person. Working with Casper police, law enforcement had also received tips throughout the week that a stolen ’72 Chevelle had been spotted in the area as early as Monday night. Officers were granted permission to search the property and located the Chevelle in a garage. No arrest was made in connection to the auto theft, Thompson said, though Casper police do have suspects.
The Chevelle’s owner, Willie Gonzales, said he was surprised it was recovered. “I didn’t think I’d see it again. I figured it was on a truck on the way to California or somewhere.”
